Professor Carlos Guedes Soares of the Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, and researcher at the Centre for Naval and Oceanic Engineering and Technology (CENTEC), expressed his pride in seeing his many years of effort recognized at a very high level. Understanding the international scope and selection process of the award highlighted its significance.
The award, presented biennially to a maximum of ten researchers, honored nine scientists in 2026. The ceremony, held on July 8th in Beijing, was presided over by the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping. Carlos Guedes Soares noted that this recognition adds to the Friendship Award he received in 2024, making him the first Portuguese to receive both distinctions from the Chinese Government.
The professor views these awards as an opportunity to strengthen ties between Portuguese and Chinese higher education and research institutions, fostering collaborations and developing partnerships, particularly in teaching science and technology in English.
Throughout his career, Carlos Guedes Soares has maintained scientific collaborations with Chinese and international institutions, in addition to participating in international organizations related to naval engineering. Since 2023, he has chaired the West European Association of Marine Technology Universities (WEGEMT).
At Técnico, Guedes Soares highlights the freedom to define research lines and establish partnerships as an important factor in building his international network. His motivation to continue teaching and researching also stems from his interactions with students and young researchers.
Scientific curiosity, coupled with engagement with learners and a desire to understand reality, drives his research. He finds discoveries and the evolution of scientific knowledge to be both exciting and motivating.
