The Nordeste Council received the artistic project “Despensas – A Tradição de Rabo de Peixe”, by Rubén Monfort, which includes a photography exhibition and a photobook on the traditional dances of the village.

The book presentation and exhibition opening took place on October 23rd at the Exhibition Hall of the Municipality of Nordeste. The exhibition and the book, which will be available for sale, can be visited by the public until November 20th.
The Despensas, a performative ritual characteristic of Rabo de Peixe, are held annually during the two major weekends of the Holy Spirit festivities. Each Despensa consists of 20 dancers with castanets and 5 musicians with guitar and accordion. Over 500 men dance through the village streets during these two weekends, visiting houses and rooms of the Holy Spirit.
This ritual has the largest participation of elements in the Azores, but its relevance contrasts with the scarce existing documentation, which motivated the creation of the project by Rubén Monfort.
At the inauguration, the municipality was represented by the vice-president and culture councilor, Marco Mourão, accompanied by friends of the author and representatives from the Nordeste Parish Council.
