The Municipality of Santiago do Cacém has launched a public tender for the construction of boardwalks and staircases at Fonte do Cortiço Beach, in the parish of Santo André, with an estimated investment of 80,000 euros.

The project stems from the need to address safety issues with the existing structure, which have led to the formation of informal trails over the dunes, causing degradation of the dune ecosystem.
The work, with a 90-day execution period, includes the construction of 106 meters of boardwalks and 28 meters of staircases. The construction will take place outside the bathing season to minimize disruption to users and the work itself.
Considering the environmental sensitivity of the area, part of the Lagoas de Santo André e da Sancha Natural Reserve, the project will use light equipment and limit earthmoving to what is strictly necessary for removing old structures and installing new ones.
By implementing these new infrastructures, the municipality aims not only to facilitate beach access but also to enhance coastal erosion protection by channeling pedestrian traffic onto a defined, elevated structure, thereby protecting the dunes and existing habitats.
