Under the theme “a conversation, four perspectives, one message”, the Autonomous Functional Unit of Senology (UFAS) held an informal discussion at the Center for Knowledge, Research and Innovation (CCII), at Hospital Garcia de Orta (HGO). The event featured active participation from over fifty professionals and the sharing of first-person testimonies.
The moderator, UFAS nurse Sílvia Pinto, highlighted the importance of having someone at HGO to listen to and support patients. Joana Simões, UFAS Doctor, addressed breast cancer in men and its distinct signs, reinforcing that "scientific evidence shows that physical exercise and a healthy diet provide our bodies with greater balance for breast cancer prevention".
Patrícia Lima, Doctor from the Oncology Service of ULSAS, stated that "fear will always be present", but that science now allows for medication to be tailored to the disease, and early diagnosis can make it chronic. Rita Paixão, physiotherapist at ULSAS, believes that adapting physiotherapy throughout the various stages of the oncological process improves patients' physical and psychological condition.
Patient Sara Dias shared her testimony, accepting her diagnosis and treatment, and focusing on sports in the initial months. Maria do Carmo, another ULSAS patient, concluded that "I cannot anticipate what will happen, but I can be part of the process", emphasizing individual choice in recovery and the importance of care from healthcare professionals.
The session aimed to promote health literacy, reinforce early detection, and demystify myths about breast cancer through a multidisciplinary approach. The President of the ULSAS Board of Directors, Pedro Correia Azevedo, praised the team's professionalism and the commitment to Senology at ULSAS.
The 'Snack Talks ULSAS' are a monthly initiative by the Board of Directors to discuss relevant topics impacting healthcare delivery.
