The School of Education of the Polytechnic University of Setúbal (ESE/UNIPS) is celebrating its 41st anniversary with the publication of the book “Centro de Recursos Educativos: Inovação na Escola” (Educational Resources Center: Innovation in the School), which revisits the establishment of this center as an innovative experience in Portuguese Higher Education.

The work, featuring a preface by Sampaio da Nóvoa, honorary rector of the University of Lisbon, will be presented tomorrow, October 21st, at 4:00 PM, as part of the ESE/UNIPS Day commemorative program. The presentation will be shared by the book's 11 authors, who were team members in various assigned roles, from Documentation and Information to Audiovisual resources, as well as the Pedagogical Workshop and the Animation sector.
Sampaio da Nóvoa will present the book at another session on October 31st, at 3:00 PM, at Fórum Grandela in Lisbon. In his writing, the distinguished professor notes that the book "is about a decisive time in our history when, after April, we sought to build a democratic education for all." He further emphasizes that "what they write deserves to be read, not only as a historical testimony but also as inspiration to rethink teacher training today."
The pedagogical project of the Educational Resources Center (1986-2022) of the then ESE/IPS is framed within the process of democratization of Higher Education and the consolidation of polytechnic institutes in Portugal. The book describes, from an internal perspective, the context of educational reform and the theoretical-practical conception that underpinned its creation, also analyzing the restructuring of teaching practices and pedagogical spaces.
According to the director of ESE/UNIPS, Pedro Felício, the publication "constitutes an important milestone in preserving the School's memory and identity," by revisiting "a pioneering experience that concretely translated the ideals of pedagogical innovation and democratization of access to knowledge." He also highlights the book's "tribute" dimension, giving voice to "all those who made this journey possible" and who now serve as "inspiration to continue affirming pedagogical innovation as a strategic priority for ESE and UNIPS."
The ESE/UNIPS Day commemorative program also includes a roundtable discussion titled “Democracy and Artificial Intelligence – New and Old Challenges for Education” and the launch of the book “Caminhos Construídos” (Built Paths), which gathers testimonies and journeys of personalities who have marked the School's history and identity.
