Portugal hosts for the first time the 53rd Annual Conference of the International Embryo Technology Society (IETS), dedicated to embryo technology and animal reproduction, which will take place from January 16 to 19, 2027, at the Alfândega Congress Centre, in Porto.

The National Institute for Agrarian and Veterinary Research (INIAV) is one of the organizers of the event, which returns to Europe after a 2015 edition. INIAV's participation is represented by researcher Dr. Manuel Garcia-Herreros, who is part of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC). With about 10 years at INIAV and over two decades of experience in animal science, Dr. Garcia-Herreros works in the areas of animal production and health, reproduction, breeding, genetics, biotechnology, and germplasm conservation.
Under the theme “Embryo technologies in a changing environment: Emerging challenges and solutions”, the conference will gather specialists from various countries, including Spain, Japan, Italy, Argentina, Brazil, the Netherlands, Germany, France, the United States, Australia, Canada, Panama, Ireland, and Belgium. The aim is to promote scientific exchange and discuss advancements in animal reproduction, embryo technology, genetics, and biotechnology.
The hosting of the conference in Portugal is seen by INIAV as an opportunity to increase the institution's international visibility, strengthen collaboration networks, and bring together researchers, universities, research centers, and companies in the animal sector. The program includes scientific sessions, symposia, workshops, and work presentations. A pre-conference symposium will address practical strategies for improving reproductive success.
The IETS, founded in 1974, aims to promote scientific and technological development in the field of embryo technology and international cooperation.
