Three teams of students from the Instituto Superior Técnico presented innovative technological solutions for highway challenges, focusing on predictive maintenance and communication security.

Over six months, students from the Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, developed technological solutions for the management of road infrastructure and communication security, as part of the TecInnov Brisa 2025/2026 program. The projects were presented on September 24th, at the program's final session, which included participation from representatives and mentors from various areas of Brisa.
In the challenge «Intelligent and Predictive Management of Highway Maintenance», the RoadVision team developed a system combining camera, LiDAR, GPS, and Wi-Fi to identify pavement anomalies, such as cracks and potholes. The solution, created by Afonso Rocha (Degree in Industrial Engineering and Management), Lucas Oliveira, and Márcio Simões (Master's in Computer Engineering), uses Artificial Intelligence to analyze data and anticipate road degradation.
The SkyRoads team proposed a network of autonomous drones equipped with LiDAR sensors to monitor road infrastructure, collecting images, video, and 3D data to identify problems in pavement, drainage, and structures. The team included Miguel Paz (Degree in Electronic Engineering), Rafael Afonso and Xavier Silva (Degree in Industrial Engineering and Management), and Rodrigo Zink (Degree in Computer Engineering).
In the domain of communication security, Frederico Castro (Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Gonçalo Teixeira (Doctoral Program in Technological Physics Engineering) explored quantum technologies. They developed the proof of concept ‘The Future of Highway Security: A Quantum Solution for Brisa’, based on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) to protect communications.
TecInnov Brisa is a collaboration between the School and Brisa, through the Técnico Partner Network, challenging students to develop proofs of concept for specific problems in the road sector.
