The initiatives took place on October 16 and 21, in the Noble Hall of the Paços do Concelho, during two meetings chaired by Ana Raquel Azevedo. The main novelty in municipal support for 2026 was the expansion of incentives for cattle farming to include breeds other than Arouquesa.
The Municipality maintained the incentive of €100 per animal of the Arouquesa breed and introduced an incentive of €75 per animal for other bovine breeds, such as Cachena and Minhota, provided requirements are met. In 2026, the incentives covered 143 cattle. For sheep and goat farmers, the annual incentive is €4.50 per adult animal, covering approximately 2,400 animals.
Councillor António Azeredo highlighted that the support "helps alleviate the burdens of those who maintain their farms" and is important for "continuing to create conditions for livestock farming to have a future in Baião".
Farmers raised issues regarding access to fallow land, licensing of structures, and criteria for incentive allocation, such as the six-month minimum stay requirement for cattle. Losses caused by wild boars, labor shortages, and proposals to boost livestock fairs were also mentioned.
For sheep and goat farmers, concerns focused on animal health costs, inspections, and losses due to flock attacks. Difficulties in collecting dead animals from farms and proposals to connect local producers with the municipality's gastronomic events were also reported.
President Ana Raquel Azevedo recalled that "agriculture and livestock farming are part of the territory's identity" and that the Council will seek "responses to their claims" from the competent authorities.
