The Espinho City Council is set to proceed with the installation of a video surveillance system comprising 34 cameras, in coordination with the Public Security Police (PSP). The primary objective is to enhance crime prevention and increase the sense of security for residents, workers, and visitors.
The cooperation protocol between the Municipality and the PSP, expected to be signed in the coming days, will allow progress on a project initiated in 2021. The goal is to have the entire system operational by the end of 2027.
The video surveillance network will cover the main entrances and exits of the city, as well as areas identified by the PSP as priorities, based on crime history and geographical distribution. The system will serve as a preventive and deterrent support to the PSP's work, in addition to collecting images for incident investigation.
The use of the cameras will be the sole responsibility of the PSP, adhering to legal rules for the protection of citizens' rights, freedoms, and guarantees. The covered areas will be duly signposted.
The Mayor of Espinho City Council, Jorge Ratola, highlighted the importance of this step. "This is another old process that had been stalled for too long and that we finally want to move forward. The safety of Espinho's residents is a priority. We want to give the PSP another tool to support their work and contribute to people feeling safer in our city," he stated.
Following the protocol's signing, the Municipality will launch public tenders for the execution project and the contracting of the works. The completion of these stages and the installation of the equipment are expected by the end of 2027, strengthening cooperation with the PSP and the protection of public spaces.
