The initiative aims to increase early detection of the disease, with the LPCC Mobile Unit available at strategic locations. Until October 16, screening will take place at the Olival UCSP, in the Health Center's Parking Lot. Subsequently, from October 20 onwards, the unit will be at the Algueirão-Mem Martins UCSP.
Francisca Pulido Valente, a Public Health physician and member of the ULS Amadora/Sintra Screening Team, emphasizes the program's importance. "Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women. In Portugal, in 2022, 9,017 new cases were diagnosed, representing about one-third of tumors in females. Scientific evidence shows that organized screening is associated with a reduction in mortality," she stated. "The goal of Public Health is not to create fear around the disease. It is to create conditions for women to know their risk and have access to a quality screening program."
Women residing in Sintra, aged between 45 and 74 years, are eligible for screening. Eligibility criteria include having no breast symptoms, not having breast implants, not having undergone a mastectomy, never having had breast cancer, and not being pregnant or breastfeeding.
