The Municipality of Guarda is promoting the publication of the collective work “A Saúde na Guarda – Antes e Depois de Abril” (Health in Guarda – Before and After April), with editorial coordination by locals Dr. José Valbom and Prof. Dr. João de Almeida Santos, marking fifty years of democratic Local Power.

The work brings together contributions from over three dozen authors and aims to provide a historical, human, and institutional testimony on the evolution of healthcare in the municipality, addressing the challenges posed by distance and geographical conditions in the organization and delivery of healthcare services.
The publication emphasizes health as an essential pillar of the Social State and an expression of territorial cohesion and social justice. It also evokes the legacy of the Sousa Martins Sanatorium, inaugurated in the early 20th century by His Majesty King Carlos I and Queen Amélia, as an expression of a pioneering vision of health.
The public presentation of the book will take place on November 13th, at 5:00 PM, in the António de Almeida Santos hall, at the Paços do Concelho (Council Building). The presentation will be led by Adalberto Campos Fernandes, Coordinator of the Strategic Pact for Health.
