The intervention, which began on October 26th, aims to preserve the landscape quality and enhance the ornamental value of this emblematic city space. The replacement of boxwood specimens (Buxus sempervirens), which show significant phytosanitary decline due to the box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis), fungal diseases, and the effects of climate change, is the main focus.
The progressive degradation of these specimens compromises the garden's landscape composition, necessitating their replacement with species better adapted to current environmental and phytosanitary conditions. Ilex crenata, a shrub with persistent foliage and morphological characteristics similar to boxwood, will be used to maintain the garden's identity and aesthetic organization.
During the execution of the works, which will last until the week of November 23rd to 27th, occasional restrictions on the use of the intervened areas may occur.
Through this initiative, the Municipality of Guimarães reaffirms its commitment to the preservation, valorization, and sustainability of urban green spaces, safeguarding the landscape quality of a garden of great centrality and relevance to the city.
