The Braga City Council approved on Tuesday, in an Executive meeting, the reduction of the Municipal Property Tax (IMI) rates and the setting of the participation in the Personal Income Tax (IRS), in a tax relief that forgoes nearly 10 million euros in revenue.
The Municipality of Braga has taken another step towards fiscal relief for its citizens by approving proposals to reduce the IMI and set the IRS participation rate. This measure represents a revenue waiver of almost 10 million euros compared to the maximum rates allowed by law, reflecting a financial management that prioritizes economic growth and direct benefits for families.
Regarding the IMI, the rate will decrease from 0.32% to 0.31% (effective for tax assessments in 2027), continuing the trajectory towards the legal minimum of 0.30% in 2028. This reduction signifies a revenue waiver of 3.7 million euros compared to the maximum ceiling of 0.35%.

"We presented the people of Braga with a concrete commitment, with defined values and deadlines, and we are rigorously fulfilling it. By 2028, Braga will have the IMI at the legal minimum, just as we promised."
The phased reduction of IMI will also generate a differential of approximately 905,000 euros, which will be reinvested in local development and parishes, increasing the Parish Cohesion Factor fund to about 1.2 million euros. The allocation for the delegation of competences to Parish Councils rises from 3.7 million euros to 4.3 million euros.
In parallel, the variable participation rate for IRS has been set at 3% for 2027, remaining below the legal maximum limit of 5%. This measure represents a direct return of 6 million euros to citizens, out of a potential maximum value of 15 million euros.

"We understand that tax reduction must be done responsibly, ensuring the balance of municipal accounts and the Council's investment capacity. We want to leave more money in families' pockets, without ceasing to invest in the city and to realize the projects Braga needs. Lowering taxes is important, but doing so sustainably, without compromising the city's future, is no less so."
