Viana do Castelo will be the stage, from September 25 to October 11, for an event aiming to demonstrate how art, science, and technology can be tools to observe, understand, and imagine the future of water. The initiative, part of the five S+T+ARTS AQUA MOTION artistic residencies, will present a program encompassing performances, workshops, cinema, gastronomy, and participatory experiences.
Activities will take place in various spaces and landscapes of the municipality, from the Lima River to the Atlantic, including the Environmental Monitoring and Interpretation Center (CMIA), the Veiga de São Simão, Praia Norte, and the future Viana STARTS Center. Artists and the community are invited to share different perspectives on aquatic ecosystems.
The program culminates the five S+T+ARTS AQUA MOTION residencies, managed by INOVA+ in collaboration with the Viana STARTS of the Viana do Castelo Municipal Council. International artists have worked with researchers, specialists, and local communities on water-related challenges.
The first weekend, starting September 25, includes project presentations at the CMIA, the screening of the work Sleeping with the Tides, exploring tidal and lunar rhythms, and a public discussion.
On Saturday, September 26, highlights include the See-Waves demonstration at the CMIA, transforming oceanic data into sound and light, followed by the participatory workshop Sensing the Weather at the Urban Ecological Park. In the evening, at the Tidal Pool of Praia Norte, a gastronomic performance with algae will take place.
Sunday, September 27, invites a sensory walk along the Lima River with the project Attuning to Absence, and the screening of the short film Lodo at the CMIA. Activities this weekend are free, some requiring prior registration.
The program continues in October, featuring an S+T+ARTS Talk on collaboration between Science, Technology, and Arts, visits to the future Viana STARTS, and workshops like Water as Experience. On October 4, 5, and 11, the FluidScope project invites participation in water quality workshops. On October 10, the CMIA hosts the presentation of Boca de Sal – Expanded Archive.

The S+T+ARTS AQUA MOTION project, co-financed by the European Union, has supported 25 residencies in four European countries, promoting collaboration between art, science, and technology to find innovative solutions for water-related challenges.
