The Municipality of Arcos de Valdevez marked the International Day of Geodiversity with a talk and the addition of new samples to the permanent exhibition “Minerais e Rochas – Coleção Silva Ferreira”, at the Oficinas de Criatividade Himalaya/Centro de Ciência Viva dos Arcos.
The President of the Municipal Chamber, Olegário Gonçalves, attended the sessions and highlighted the importance of science in the region, reaffirming the municipality's commitment to supporting and promoting scientific programs and events.
The conference "Os minerais no contexto da geodiversidade" (Minerals in the context of geodiversity), delivered by José Brilha from the University of Minho, provided a better understanding of the fascinating world of minerals and their connection to our daily lives.
Following this, the exhibition “Tesouros da Terra III” (Treasures of the Earth III) was inaugurated, showcasing new mineral samples that now form part of the permanent collection “Minerais e Rochas – Coleção Silva Ferreira”.
The permanent mineral collection is a generous donation from Dr. José Silva Ferreira, who continues to expand the collection available to schools, institutions, and the general public, allowing for the exploration of the vast variety of minerals collected from around the world.
