The Municipal Services of Setúbal (SMS) were responsible for collection and cleaning on the beaches of Saúde, Albarquel, Figueirinha, Galapos, Galapinhos, Creiro, and Alpertuche, between June and October. The operation included reinforced disposal facilities and collection and cleaning capacity.
The human resources and equipment included ten cleaning operators, one supervisor, two open-bed vehicles, a tractor, a screening machine for sand cleaning, various tools and accessories, and over 90 120-liter bins with supports and bags for waste separation.
The disposal system was modernized by replacing surface bins with three 5-cubic-meter semi-underground containers at Praia da Figueirinha and one at Praia de Albarquel. These changes increased storage capacity and reduced the visual impact.
Measures such as mechanical cleaning of the sand during the early morning, integration of undifferentiated and recyclable waste collection in the same operation, and sorting of all produced waste were implemented.
The investment totaled approximately 142 thousand euros. The assessment is positive, with a clear improvement in beach cleaning quality, benefiting general usability conditions, operational efficiency, and waste recycling maximization.
Still in the implementation phase are door-to-door collection for the residential sector at Portinho da Arrábida and organic waste collection in the restaurant sector.
