Promoted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the program aims to recognize the merit and potential of Portuguese higher education students, encouraging initiation into research. For 12 months, scholars will develop a research project under the guidance of a tutor and the supervision of a scientific committee, also participating in workshops and scientific retreats.
Gustavo Mourinho, a student in the Master's program in Bioorganic Chemistry, expressed his satisfaction at receiving this award for the third time: «To have the honor of being distinguished for the third time by this program is a great validation for the academic path I have been building. But, more than a personal achievement, I am happy to have access to the set of tools that Gulbenkian offers us to understand current science and to disseminate the research I will conduct throughout this year.»
Tomás Vaz, a student in the Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, is participating in the program for the second time. «Now, with last year's experience, I know better what I want to do and I want to use this scholarship to explore other avenues. Currently, I am very interested in biomedicine, with a foundation in biochemistry, in conjunction with neuroscience», he explained. His previous experience allowed him to present two posters at conferences and make many interesting contacts.
Rita Pedrosa, also a student in the Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, is new to the program. «I am very happy. I think it will provide me with opportunities to learn beyond what the faculty already offers, with more travel, participation in conferences, and a network of scholars, excellent students with different experiences and perspectives», she stated.
The program includes financial support for studies and training activities, such as conferences and internships, with the total amount potentially reaching 4,500 euros, including a complementary social support component. The closing of this edition is scheduled for November 2027.
Ana Aguiar-Ricardo, President of the Department of Chemistry, highlighted that «this distinction recognizes the talent and commitment of Gustavo, Rita, and Tomás, and is a cause for great satisfaction for our entire school.» She emphasized the dedication of the faculty and researchers in supporting students, fostering curiosity, autonomy, and scientific rigor, aiming to contribute to a more sustainable world and improve people's quality of life.
