The initiative, part of the “À Mão de Semear” project, aims to encourage the correct separation of organic waste and promote more sustainable habits within the school community. Two 45-liter and two 120-liter bins were provided free of charge to each educational institution, intended for waste generated in cafeterias and bars.
Collection will take place twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. During the project presentation, Tejo Ambiente raised awareness among school representatives and staff about the importance of valorizing organic waste, clarifying which items can be deposited in the bins and explaining the collection service's operation.
Raw or cooked food scraps can be placed in the bins, contributing to the proper management of organic waste and reducing the amount sent to landfill. The handover was attended by various municipal representatives, including the vice-president of the Municipal Chamber of Tomar, Célia Bonet, and councilor Samuel Fontes.
The “À Mão de Semear” project, co-financed by the Environmental Fund, develops solutions for the separation and valorization of organic waste in the six municipalities covered by Tejo Ambiente. In addition to door-to-door collection in urban areas, it also offers a domestic composting solution in peri-urban and rural areas.
Enrollment is free and can be done through the Tejo Ambiente portal at tejoambiente.pt/biorresiduos/.
