The Rio Maior School of Sport (ESDRM) hosted the opening ceremony for the new Doctoral Program in Sports Sciences, a pioneering milestone for polytechnic higher education in Portugal.

This doctoral program represents the first initiative of its kind in Sports Sciences to be developed in a consortium by six Polytechnic Higher Education Institutions. The involved institutions are the Polytechnic Universities of Santarém, Beja, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Guarda, and Viana do Castelo, marking a significant step in academic collaboration.
The opening session was attended by prominent figures, including the Secretary of State for Sport, Pedro Dias, the Rector of the Polytechnic University of Santarém, João Moutão, the Director of ESDRM, Nuno Pimenta, the Coordinator of the Doctoral Coordination Commission, Luís Paulo Rodrigues, and the Councilor for Education of the Municipal Chamber of Rio Maior, Leonor Fragoso.
The event brought together representatives from partner institutions, entities from the national sports system, municipalities, research centers, and organizations from the fields of sport, health, and education, underscoring the scientific and institutional importance of this new cycle of studies.
The inaugural lecture was delivered by Professor Doctor Pedro Pezarat Correia, from the Egas Moniz School of Health and Science, and was aimed at the twenty students comprising the program's first cohort.
With twenty enrolled students, this doctorate aims to boost research in Sports Sciences, strengthen inter-institutional cooperation, and enhance the scientific production capacity of the polytechnic sector.
The choice of ESDRM to host this inaugural session reinforces its status as a national reference in advanced training, research, and scientific development in the field of sport.
