The initiative was attended by teachers, non-teaching staff, the director of the Agrupamento de Escolas D. Sancho I de Pontével, Jorge Tavares, and the Councilor for Education of the Municipal Chamber, Maria de Fátima Vinagre. The session, focused on Environmental Education and Sustainability, was led by Simone Sequeira Lopes, national coordinator of End Plastic Soup Portugal. The objective was to raise awareness about the problems caused by plastic pollution and encourage more sustainable habits, also marking the launch of an activity program for the two school clusters in the municipality.
The End Plastic Soup project is an international movement against plastic pollution in water, soil, and air, involving schools, associations, citizens, and public entities. It promotes environmental awareness and the adoption of responsible behaviors.
Planned activities include a waste collection drive to create sculptures and artistic installations, which will be presented to the community. An environmental walk is also foreseen to engage the educational community with public spaces and nature.
Through this project, the Municipal Chamber of Cartaxo, in collaboration with schools and partners, aims to strengthen the environmental awareness of the educational community and encourage children and young people to play an active role in environmental protection. Sharing acquired knowledge with families is also a way to extend the initiative's impact and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable municipality.
