The health literacy initiative, held last Friday, October 16th, involved children, adults, and seniors, aiming to promote health within the population by encouraging health education, disease prevention, and routine screenings.
Throughout the day, screenings for blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index, and vision were carried out. The event took place in four locations in Galinheiras: the Athletics Center, Largo das Galinheiras, Campo Desportivo (Estrada Militar), and Recinto da Feira, and was open to the entire community of the Freguesia de Santa Clara and anyone wishing to participate.
The program included awareness-raising actions on healthy eating, oral health, and cancer screenings, as well as music, physical exercise, sensory and emotional activities, and psychomotor development. For the younger attendees, food had two highlights: in "Vamos às Compras" (Let's Go Shopping), children learned to read the Nutri-Score, and at the "Estação da Sazonalidade Alimentar" (Food Seasonality Station), they associated fruits and vegetables with the time of year.
The activities were led by professionals from UCC Lumiar+ and participating partners, including other units from ULS Santa Maria, such as the Francisco George Public Health Unit and the HSM Stomatology Service. The Public Health Unit took the opportunity to promote the ULSSM Screening Center, which allows users without a family doctor to book screenings for cervical and colorectal cancer.
The event was attended by Cátia Gaspar, Manager of the Primary Healthcare Area; Rita Dias, Senior Technician of the Primary Healthcare Management Team; Isabel Oliveira, Deputy Nurse; and Isabel Matos, Coordinator of UCC Lumiar+, who congratulated the professionals involved for their work.
