The Government has greenlit three investments set to transform mobility for hundreds of thousands of people. The financial effort totals 487 million euros, allocated to the expansion of Metro do Porto, with extensions to the Gondomar and Trofa lines, and to the reinforcement of Metro Mondego. These investments aim to provide better mobility, greater savings, and a reduction in car traffic.
The investments approved in the Council of Ministers include the Gondomar Line, with a budget of 237 million euros, comprising 7 km and 9 stations, connecting the Estádio do Dragão to the center of Gondomar. The Trofa Line will receive 184 million euros for 10 km and 9 stations, between ISMAI and the Interface da Trofa, to be implemented in metro and metrobus mode between 2027 and 2031.
For the Metro Mondego, 66.3 million euros have been allocated, which will enable the acquisition of five more hydrogen buses (in addition to the 35 already planned), the installation of a battery charging system, and the completion of the Material and Workshop Park for maintenance.
Largely financed by the Environmental Fund and the Sustainable 2030 Program, these projects contribute to the challenges of sustainability and climate transition. The goal is to promote the increasing use of public transport and consequently reduce reliance on individual road transport, boosting the decarbonization of the economy and improving quality of life.
“"We chose to invest in sustainable public transport. We chose the investment that lasts, that transforms, and that decarbonizes. It's 487 million to connect what was disconnected and to help those who need public transport every day to get around."
