The photographic work 'Intensive Memories – an emotional look at an intensive care unit service in times of pandemic', by neuroradiologist and photographer Clara Ramalhão, will be presented at the Centre for Culture and Congresses of the Northern Regional Section of the Order of Physicians, in Porto, on September 29th, at 9:00 PM. The book, which captures moments experienced in the Intensive Care Unit of Hospital Pedro Hispano during the Covid-19 pandemic, stems from a humanist and emotional perspective.
The event will feature an initial address by the President of the Northern Regional Council of the Order of Physicians, José Torres Costa, and contributions from Manuel Sobrinho Simões, author of the preface, and journalist Carlos Magno. Admission is free.
Clara Ramalhão describes the work as a humanist reflection on the pandemic, using photography to preserve memories and emotions experienced in intensive care, serving as an important historical testimony. Manuel Sobrinho Simões praises the work as a 'tour-de-force' of vocation and dedication, highlighting the author's sensitivity and ethics, who achieved 'the marriage of tenderness with art'.
Carlos Magno emphasizes Ramalhão's sensitivity as both a doctor and photographer, considering the publication a 'testimony of a period when life and death were recorded by the lens of a professional doubly committed to the human dimension of life at risk'. The journalist notes that this is 'the first post-pandemic publication that registers the COVID-19 period' in these terms.
The author, born in Lourenço Marques, Mozambique, is a neuroradiologist at Hospital Pedro Hispano and a photographer since 1997. In 2025, she was awarded the International Enrico Caruso Prize. Since 2009, she has led humanitarian health intervention projects in Mozambique and founded MAssALA – Associação de Médicos no Abraço a Moçambique.
