The Douro Intermunicipal Community (CIM Douro) was present at the 7th edition of the Porto Maritime Week, which took place at the Port of Leixões from September 21st to 25th. CIM Douro participated in the panel titled “The Future of Douro: Strategic Challenges and Priorities,” where the main challenges for the region were discussed.
Represented by its 1st Intermunicipal Executive Secretary, João Rodrigues, CIM Douro highlighted the importance of the growth of river tourism on the Douro River as an economic opportunity for the region. The need to strengthen the connection between visitors and the various territories, companies, and local economic agents was emphasized.
During the debate, the Douro 2040 Strategy was presented, a document being prepared by CIM Douro that aims to define an integrated vision for regional development in the coming decade and anticipate priorities for the next community programming cycle. This strategy is based on consultations with mayors, economic agents, and other relevant entities.
Challenges related to the Douro Navigable Waterway were also addressed, particularly the need to continue improving the safety, navigability, and infrastructure capacity conditions, given the increase in river activity.
The Porto Maritime Week 2026, promoted by Transportes & Negócios, brought together experts, companies, and organizations from the maritime-port sector at the Infante D. Henrique Auditorium, in the Port of Leixões, to debate the sector's challenges and opportunities.
