The works, set to begin in the coming days, will cover approximately 26.5 kilometers of watercourses, including the River Teixeira itself and its tributaries. The project aims to combat erosion, improve environmental conditions, and implement nature-based solutions to minimize flood impacts.
The project, titled “Adaptation and reinforcement of the resilience of the River Teixeira riparian corridor for flood risk minimization in ARPSI of Baião,” was presented by Environmental Engineer Pedro Teiga. It stems from an application to the Norte 2030 Regional Program, with 75% community funding.
The investment includes technical studies, land acquisition for water retention areas, and the installation of monitoring and communication equipment. The Mayor of Baião, Ana Raquel Azevedo, highlighted the importance of this preventive measure given the risks associated with extreme weather events and past flood damage.
The project includes riverbed cleaning, removal of invasive species, bank stabilization, and riparian vegetation restoration with native species. Designated flood zones will be created to temporarily retain water and reduce flow velocity.
Meteorological and hydrometric stations, video surveillance systems, and other devices will be installed to monitor river conditions and anticipate risk situations, aiding decision-making during floods.
