The initiative, one of the most emblematic of the municipality's cultural and tourist calendar, once again highlights the chestnut, one of the region's most representative products, bringing together gastronomy, crafts, local products, and entertainment over two days. The purchase of five tons of chestnuts is particularly important in a year when producers face difficulties due to adverse weather conditions, namely the lack of rainfall and high temperatures, which have caused significant drops in production.
By prioritizing direct purchase from local producers, the Municipality of Marvão seeks to contribute to the valorization of local production and the dynamization of the economy, while simultaneously reinforcing the importance of the Marvão-Portalegre DOP Chestnut and its certification process.
During the weekend, visitors can taste roasted chestnuts at the traditional 'magustos' (roasting stations), discover regional products, and learn about the work of local producers and artisans. The program also includes gastronomic demonstrations, workshops, children's activities, and various moments of musical and street entertainment.
“"The official opening is scheduled for Saturday, November 14th, at 10:00 AM, with the traditional blessing of the chestnuts, followed by the opening of the roasting stations and exhibition and sales areas."
Among the highlights of the first day are a chestnut pastry workshop, with chef Cristiano Louro, and a concert by Descendentes, at 4:00 PM. On Sunday, November 15th, the program continues with the showcooking ‘Manjares de Castanha’ (Chestnut Delicacies), led by chef Luís de Matos. The musical closing will be by David Antunes and Emanuel Moura, with a show scheduled for 4:00 PM, at Largo do Terreiro.
The Chestnut Festival – Chestnut Fair also provides an opportunity to promote Marvão's natural, cultural, and gastronomic heritage, reinforcing the link between the chestnut tradition, producers' activity, and the territory's tourist appeal. The event takes place on both days, between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM, in the historic center of the town of Marvão.
