The Mayor of Funchal, Jorge Carvalho, received yesterday at the Paços do Concelho the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Younous Omarjee. The official visit to the Autonomous Region of Madeira by a delegation of 10 MEPs from the Committee on Regional Development (REGI) included meetings with the archipelago's main political institutions.
During the audience, which also included the Vice-President of the CMF, Carlos Rodrigues, the role and importance of funding for the Outermost Regions (ORs) for the future of the European Union were discussed, with a particular focus on island municipalities. Jorge Carvalho provided examples of implemented and ongoing projects, essential for the city and its residents, which are only possible due to access to community funds within a 'Europe of Regions' framework, advocating for a more decentralized Union.
Jorge Carvalho and Younous Omarjee, who hails from the Island of Réunion, another Outermost Region, have had previous working contacts. The Mayor of Funchal, when he was Regional Secretary for Education, participated in several OR meetings representing the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
