“"The signing of these protocols thus represents a natural step in the coordination with INEM, constituting an opportunity to strengthen complementarity and promote the sharing of human resources, knowledge, and professional experience between the hospital and pre-hospital areas."

The Local Health Unit of Santa Maria (ULSSM) and the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) reinforced their institutional coordination, in a ceremony attended by the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, where the country's first fully electric Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER) was delivered.
The ceremony, held at Santa Maria Hospital, was also marked by the signing of two other pioneering agreements in Portugal in the areas of pre-hospital emergency and resource sharing in response to the population. These protocols aim to enhance complementarity between hospital care and on-the-ground emergency services.
The agreements include the partial mobility of professionals from medical and nursing careers, with joint training initiatives and skills enhancement, as well as the allocation of space at Santa Maria Hospital for the installation of the first Basic Life Support ambulance adjacent to a hospital unit in the network.
With these new integrations, the ULSSM now has a unique national response, combining an electric VMER, a Basic Life Support Ambulance, a Pediatric Inter-Hospital Transport vehicle, and a renovated heliport, complementing its differentiated services in Emergency, Intensive Care, and the Burn Unit.
The President of ULSSM, Carlos das Neves Martins, highlighted the impact of the new fleet and the synergies created to save lives and ensure greater attractiveness and training differentiation for the health professionals involved.
