Following the closure of fishing on June 19th, 2026, the Government initiated negotiations for its reopening. Based on scientific information and evidence of the socioeconomic impact on fishing communities, Portugal has achieved positive results that uphold the environmental and socioeconomic pillars of the Common Fisheries Policy.
The final proposal from the European Commission, approved on Monday at the Agrifish Council in Luxembourg, includes an additional 44.4 tonnes for Portugal until the end of 2026. This increase comprises 24.4 tonnes for legitimate sole in November and December, and 20 tonnes for two other sole species.
In total, considering the over-utilization of the initial quota and the remaining available quota for other species, Portugal has 85 tonnes of sole for November and December 2026, a period when this fishery is particularly valued.
The outcome is the result of persistent negotiation and the determined defense of national interests before European institutions, combining political dialogue with rigorous technical work. The European Commission recognizes the complexity of this fishery and facilitates a solution that allows its resumption, contributing to a management system more aligned with the reality of Portuguese fishing.
It is recalled that, due to the socioeconomic impact of the closure of the legitimate sole fishery, the Government granted aid of 360 thousand euros to the sector. Applications have been open since October 1st and can be submitted via the Balcão Eletrónico do Mar until October 31st, 2026.
