The space, which has never closed its doors to those most in need, offers various social services, including a social dining hall serving approximately 360 meals daily, a temporary accommodation center, occupational workshops, changing rooms, laundry, and a clothing bank. The facility also provides psychiatric consultations, promoting the well-being, autonomy, and inclusion of users.
The intervention was supported by a legacy from the benefactress Maria Cesarina Mota Vieira. The inauguration included a blessing by the Chaplain of Santa Casa and Rector of the Church of São Roque, Padre Francisco Campos.
Present at the ceremony were Maria do Rosário Palma Ramalho, Minister of Labor, Solidarity, and Social Security, and Maria Luísa Aldim, councilor of the Lisbon Municipal Chamber. They were received by Paulo Sousa, Provedor of Santa Casa, and members of the Misericórdia de Lisboa administration.
“"This building addresses the most basic form of poverty: hunger"
The minister highlighted the work of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, noting that over the past two years, several facilities have been rebuilt, rehabilitated, or reopened, with an investment of over one million euros supporting nearly 1,000 people, also emphasizing the patronage that aided in the redevelopment.
Paulo Sousa, Provedor of Santa Casa, explained that the center's redevelopment aims to create better reception conditions and enhance the quality of services provided, resulting in over 130,000 meals annually and support for 960 individuals, while also ensuring 15 temporary accommodation beds.
“"More than numbers, this data shows the continuity of a mission fulfilled every day, welcoming and supporting those most in need"
