Portugal Records Four Years of Economic Growth with Reduced Emissions

For the first time since 1995, Portugal has recorded four consecutive years of economic growth accompanied by a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, demonstrating a decoupling between economic activity and emissions.

In 2024, greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 2.8% compared to the previous year, totaling 52.0 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. This figure represents the lowest value recorded since the statistical series began in 1995. The reduction occurred amidst economic growth, with the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at market prices increasing by 2.7%.
The combination of a decrease in GHG emissions (-2.8%) and GDP growth (+2.7%) resulted in a 5.4% drop in Portugal's economic carbon intensity. This indicator reached its lowest value in the statistical series, reinforcing the decarbonization trend.
