The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon has announced the opening of applications for the first edition of the Carolina Fernandes-Henriques Research Initiation Scholarship. The initiative, promoted by the researcher's family, aims to transform Carolina's memory into a concrete opportunity for other students.
Carolina Fernandes-Henriques began her scientific journey at Ciências ULisboa, where she pursued a Bachelor's degree in Biology. She was one of the first students at the faculty to receive a scholarship from the Amadeu Dias Foundation, support that allowed her to take her first steps in research. Subsequently, she attended international institutions such as the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the University of Bordeaux, and University of Tsukuba in Japan, before completing a PhD in Neurosciences at the City University of New York (CUNY) in the United States.
Beyond science, Carolina distinguished herself through her involvement in sports, student representation, the promotion of women in science, and volunteer and community intervention initiatives. She was the national university and U23 athletics champion and participated in various academic and civic initiatives.
Carolina passed away in 2024, at the age of 30, shortly after completing her PhD. Her journey and her connection to Ciências ULisboa remain an inspiration to the academic community.
