The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT NOVA) today welcomed three participants from the Girl Move Academy program, promoted by the Girl Move Academy, an initiative focused on training young Mozambican women to assume leadership and social innovation roles. The program combines community work in Mozambique with an international stage in Portugal.
This year, the group of Girl Movers stood out for their strong connection to medicine and public health. The visitors, doctors working in various provinces of Mozambique, share a common goal: to increase health literacy in their communities and lead this transformation.
During the visit, they shared their intervention and research focuses, which include promoting oral health literacy, creating digital health platforms, and investigating safe alternatives to frequent drug intoxication often associated with local traditional healers' practices.
At IHMT NOVA, they were welcomed by Prof. Doutor Ricardo Parreira. Prof. Doutora Ana Abecasis, Director of the Global Public Health Unit, shared cooperation and research projects from IHMT NOVA and GHTM, addressing topics such as infection transmission, nutrition, social determinants, epidemiology, and health literacy.
Prof. Doutora Ana Abecasis also presented opportunities for advanced training, such as the Master's and Doctoral programs at IHMT NOVA.
The visit concluded with a tour of the Institute's facilities, guided by Dr. Salima Rehemtula, coordinator of the Library and Museum Management Office.
IHMT NOVA considered it a privilege to share experiences and wishes the young Girl Movers the greatest success upon their return to Mozambique.
