The Ministry of Environment and Energy has announced the availability of 4.7 million euros in European funds for the protection of Portugal's coastline, through the Sustainable 2030 program.

The Sustainable 2030 program, focused on climate action and sustainability, will allocate 4.7 million euros of European funds to improve knowledge about the evolution of the Portuguese coast. The aim is to prepare priority interventions for coastal protection and defense throughout the Country, safeguarding people, property, and ecosystems.
This funding will support the development of studies, plans, and projects, as well as coastal monitoring. The actions aim to anticipate risks and underpin the necessary interventions for coastal and estuarine protection, including the identification and characterization of risks affecting these areas.
“

"Protecting the coastline requires better knowledge of our coast's evolution and timely preparation of necessary interventions. This funding will allow us to identify risks, define priorities, and develop projects to protect populations, property, and coastal ecosystems."

Maria da Graça Carvalho · Minister of Environment and Energy
The actions should be framed within the Litoral XXI Action Plan or its successor document, with a view to implementing priority interventions in the medium term. Support may cover up to 85% of the action's value.
Applications, directed to the Portuguese Environment Agency, are planned between October 2026 and January 2027 and will cover the regions of North, Center, Lisbon Metropolitan Area, Alentejo, and Algarve.
