The municipalities of Peniche and Lourinhã have taken a decisive step towards the construction of a new Intermunicipal Waste Collection and Referral Center, a new-generation infrastructure that will strengthen the response capacity of both municipalities and contribute to more sustainable, efficient, and economical environmental management.

Valorsul will carry out the intervention project, which will be presented in the first half of 2027. The initiative will allow for the requalification and modernization of the currently existing center in Peniche, while simultaneously ensuring a proximity response for the Municipality of Lourinhã, adapted to its needs. The investment will be integrated into Valorsul's Multi-year Investment Plan, with its financing fully secured by this entity.
This project will represent the largest investment in the history of the municipalities of Peniche and Lourinhã in the area of waste treatment and referral, addressing an essential objective for environmental protection and the quality of life of the populations.
“

"From an environmental perspective, this will be a transformative solution for our municipality. We will have a closer, more effective, efficient, and economical response. Reducing travel compared to the current referral to Vilar will save resources and reduce environmental impact, improving the service provided to the population."

Orlando Carvalho · Mayor of Lourinhã
The center's location near the geographical border between the two municipalities will reduce the distances traveled in transporting waste from Lourinhã, currently sent to Vilar. This greater proximity will help decrease operational costs, fuel consumption, and associated transport emissions.
“

"Inter-municipal cooperation gains true meaning when it translates into concrete solutions that improve the service provided to the populations. This project demonstrates that cooperation between municipalities allows for better resource utilization, strengthens territorial cohesion, and provides a joint response to shared challenges. It is a structural investment for Peniche and Lourinhã, with benefits for the entire region."

Filipe Sales · Mayor of Peniche
Conceived as a modern, new-generation infrastructure, the future center will allow for the adaptation of waste collection, temporary storage, sorting, and referral conditions, in line with national legal frameworks and European directives on waste and the circular economy.
With this project, Peniche and Lourinhã reinforce a cooperation strategy based on resource sharing, service modernization, and environmental protection, placing inter-municipal cooperation at the service of the populations.
