The Portuguese League Against Cancer – Regional Center of the Center (LPCC.NRC) presented, in Leiria, the initiatives for the Pink October campaign and the programming for the “Pequenos Passos, Grandes Gestos®” walks. The event, held at Jardim Luís de Camões, aims to mobilize the population for the prevention and fight against breast cancer.
The session was attended by Natália Amaral, Secretary-General of the LPCC.NRC Directorate, Carlos Palheira, Sports Councilor of the Leiria Municipal Council, Eliana Gonçalves, Head of the Volunteering Unit, and Ana Luísa Pereira, a breast cancer survivor and volunteer of the Vencer e Viver Movement, in addition to representatives from the Portuguese League Against Cancer.
This year, Leiria was the stage for the campaign, a gesture associated with the symbolism of the region's recovery after the Kristin storm. The choice reinforces the importance of joint mobilization by institutions, municipalities, and the community.
Natália Amaral emphasized the importance of early diagnosis through screenings to save lives, prevention even without symptoms, and the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits. She mentioned obesity, tobacco use, advanced age, and family history as risk factors.
Carlos Palheira highlighted the role of the National Health Service and the Portuguese League Against Cancer in awareness and solidarity, assuring that "no one is alone" on this journey.
The councilor called for the participation of Leiria residents in the “Pequenos Passos, Grandes Gestos®” walk, which takes place on October 10th, at 3:00 PM, starting from Jardim Luís de Camões. The objective is to amplify the prevention message and reach more people. He also thanked the contribution of partner entities such as NEL and the PSP.
