The Municipality of Guarda, in partnership with the PSP, is launching a campaign to raise awareness about responsible companion animal adoption, aiming to prevent abandonment and promote the benefits of this practice.

The Official Collection Center of the Municipality of Guarda is running several initiatives focused on the responsible adoption of companion animals housed at the facility, and on preventing abandonment. The campaign highlights the numerous benefits of adoption, for both adopters and animals, who provide companionship, help reduce stress, and promote a more active lifestyle, improving their owners' mental and physical health.
This initiative reinforces values such as citizenship, empathy, and civic awareness. It emphasizes the importance of welcoming an animal in a planned and conscious manner, providing information on the owner's responsibilities, including health care, nutrition, space, and dedicated time. The campaign also warns about the consequences of impulsive adoption and encourages sterilization for litter control.
The adoption process is straightforward, starting with a visit to the Municipal Kennel. Prior appointment is recommended for personalized guidance and advice on the animal best suited to the future owner's lifestyle. Animals are provided sterilized, electronically identified, registered in the Companion Animal Information System, with a health record, internally and externally dewormed, and vaccinated (including rabies for dogs over three months old).
The municipality is collaborating with the Public Security Police of Guarda and other entities to increase the campaign's visibility and spread the message throughout the community and to visitors of the region.
The "Adopt Responsibly" campaign is featured on municipal display panels, digital platforms, and informational leaflets. The central message is clear: "Don't Buy. Don't Abandon. Adopt. Make it Yours!".
