The performance is a tribute to the acclaimed Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and combines piano, violin, and cello with a strong video art and multimedia component. The show revisits the work “1996”, released that year, through an interpretation based on the original scores available in a rare edition supervised by the composer himself. The trio responsible for the project is one of the few ensembles worldwide to present this work in concert.
The work “1996” features themes associated with some of Sakamoto's most iconic soundtracks, including “The Last Emperor”, “Babel”, “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence”, and “The Sheltering Sky”. It reveals the diversity of influences that shaped the composer's career, from traditional Japanese music to the classical music of composers like Bach, Debussy, and Schumann.
The program also includes works by composer and arranger João Vasco, the project's mentor. These are featured on the album “2016”, created in tribute to Sakamoto and presented on an international tour between 2019 and 2023, with stops in countries across four continents.
Ryuichi Sakamoto, who passed away in March 2023, left behind a body of work marked by the fusion of different musical and artistic languages.
