The Senior Month in Tavira aims to value the role of the elderly population in the community, providing moments of social interaction, participation, learning, and promotion of active aging. More than a commemorative program, the initiative seeks to energize partnerships between entities, raise community awareness about the challenges of aging, and reaffirm the importance of continuous intervention focused on proximity, prevention of social isolation, promotion of autonomy, and creation of community support networks.
Given the aging population and challenges associated with loneliness, social isolation, and geographical dispersion, the Tavira municipality has supported initiatives that allow the senior population to remain integrated in the community with quality of life, safety, and social participation. The year-round proximity intervention includes several psychosocial projects, such as Cuidame-te, Lado a Lado, Lado a Lado 2.0, Amor com Tempero 2.0, Info. Cuidador 2.0, and Projeto 360.º Saúde Mental Algarve 2.0, which develop regular activities in cognitive stimulation, individualized psychological support, physical activity, and senior gymnastics, as well as information and prevention actions.
Cooperation with the council's social entities is fundamental for providing services such as Day Centers, Home Support Services, and Social Canteens, which ensure accompaniment and support for seniors and their families, promoting autonomy and delaying dependency whenever possible.
The promotion of health and prevention are essential dimensions, with year-round initiatives focusing on physical activity, healthy eating, mental health, disease prevention, and caregiver training. The valorization of the Mediterranean Diet is part of this approach to promoting well-being and active aging.
The prevention and combating of social isolation are transversal concerns, aiming to create opportunities for social participation, interaction, and learning. The Senior Age Group (GIS), integrated into the Tavira Social Network, is particularly relevant in coordinating entities to identify needs and promote joint responses.
The programming for Senior Month 2026 results from this collaborative work, aiming to diversify participation opportunities and respond to identified interests and needs. The Municipality of Tavira thus intends not only to mark an occasion but also to value the contribution of the senior population to the community and reinforce the importance of building a more inclusive municipality, closer to its citizens and prepared for the challenges of demographic aging.
