The Musical Imagination Park (PIM) officially opened its doors in the heart of Guimarães' City Park, marking a permanent legacy for the city. This new public space, which merges music, nature, and creativity, originated from a community proposal as part of Guimarães 26 - European Green Capital. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Ricardo Araújo, Mayor of Guimarães, Patrick Child, Deputy Director-General for Environment at the European Commission, and the project's creators, Tiago Simães (musician and composer) and João Mendes (architect).
Ricardo Araújo highlighted the PIM's community-driven origin, emphasizing the importance of translating citizen participation into concrete projects. "It is a project from the community, for the community," he stated, underscoring that the European Green Capital initiative only makes sense with active citizen involvement. The Mayor also noted that, although the work began and concluded in 2026, its significance extends beyond physical completion, expressing hope that it "will endure over time."
The Mayor framed the project within a vision for the city that values its history and traditions while embracing innovation. "A land with strong roots is a land that is not afraid to imagine its future and build its present," he declared, emphasizing the link between culture and the environment. For Ricardo Araújo, the PIM exemplifies how Guimarães harmonizes its cultural dynamism with environmental preservation, reinforcing its identity as a city that was once the European Capital of Culture and is now, in 2026, the European Green Capital.
Conceived by the Guimarães-born musician and composer Tiago Simães, with an idea dating back 14 years, the PIM aims to bring music beyond classrooms and auditoriums. The goal is to create a space accessible to everyone, regardless of age or musical knowledge, for playing, listening, experimenting, and discovering sounds. "In a time when much of our lives happens through screens, it seems particularly important to create places that return us to the physical world, to curiosity, to play," commented Tiago Simães, thanking the Municipality for supporting the proposal.
The park features over 65 musical installations, presenting itself as a habitable work of art where sound, movement, and nature intersect to provide an experience of discovery and creativity. The inauguration included demonstrations of the sound elements' activation, allowing visitors to explore their musical potential.
The project, representing a municipal investment of approximately 250,000 euros, involved the municipal companies Vitrus Ambiente and Laboratório da Paisagem. The intervention integrates artistic creation, architecture, and environmental enhancement, including the introduction of 14 new plant species (2,750 specimens) and the application of circular economy principles, such as the reuse of tires for elements like the vinyl record-shaped stage.
The architecture, designed by João Mendes, integrates the equipment and pathways into the surrounding landscape. The architect thanked Tiago Simães for the challenge and highlighted the Municipal Executive's forward-thinking vision and commitment to quality of life, emphasizing the importance of combining environmental preservation with biodiversity enhancement.
The inauguration ceremony was marked by a musical performance by young people who brought the park's sound stations to life, inviting attendees to discover and experiment with the instruments. The delegation's tour was guided by a 'Nicolino,' a symbolic moment that blended Guimarães' identity and traditions with the creativity and innovation characterizing the new Musical Imagination Park.
With the PIM, Guimarães reinforces its vision of urban innovation, bringing culture closer to people, valuing green spaces, and transforming community participation into collective heritage. The park, available for free use, stands as a legacy of Guimarães 26, inviting different generations to discover music, nature, and new ways of experiencing public space.
