The thematic session, under the theme “Building Serpa's Climate Future,” took place in the Noble Hall of the Paços do Concelho, in Serpa, on October 28, 2026. The meeting was attended by the President of the Serpa Municipal Assembly, Ricardo Mestre, the 1st Secretary, Margarida Rocha, and the 2nd Secretary, Diogo Tadeu, along with the municipal executive, municipal deputies, and teachers.
At the opening of the proceedings, Ricardo Mestre highlighted the opportunity this space offers young people to contribute with climate action measures. The Mayor, Francisco Picareta, reinforced the municipal commitment to implementing the proposed actions and working together with the youth.
Following a brief presentation of the Serpa Municipal Climate Action Plan (PMAC-S), proposals were presented by the young deputies elected by School Groupings No. 1 and No. 2, and by the Professional School of Rural Development of Serpa.
This initiative reinforces the role of the AMJS as a space for civic and democratic participation for the youth of the municipality, promoting their active involvement in public life and in building responses to the territory's challenges.
Among the 17 unanimously approved measures, reflecting the youth's priorities for a more sustainable municipality, are the planting of native trees, the creation and maintenance of green spaces, rainwater harvesting, the installation of drinking fountains in schools, the creation of school gardens, exchange centers and second-hand shops, a Youth Environmental Volunteering program, monitoring the state of the cork oak forest (montado), and the establishment of a PMAC-S monitoring committee with the participation of two municipal deputies.
