The Baixo Alentejo Local Health Unit (ULSBA) has received authorization from the Government to assume a multi-year financial commitment of up to 4.56 million euros, plus VAT, for the contracting of services for the architectural design and execution of the renovation and expansion of the Hospital José Joaquim Fernandes, in Beja.

The decision was formalized through Order No. 445/2026/2, published on November 5th in the Diário da República. This authorization represents a significant step in the process of preparing for future intervention at the hospital, allowing ULSBA to undertake the necessary financial commitments for contracting the planned services.
The contract to be awarded will cover the development of the project and will extend until the completion of the construction and renovation works, including the delivery of the final project documentation. The authorized investment will be distributed across the years 2026, 2027, 2028, 2030, and 2040, financed by ULSBA's own funds.
The published authorization allows for progress in the financial framework of the process, followed by the necessary steps for contracting and realizing the project. The renovation and expansion of the Hospital José Joaquim Fernandes is a relevant intervention for the future of the hospital unit and for strengthening healthcare response capacity in the Baixo Alentejo region.
