The initiative, which aims to alert young people to the importance of preserving rivers, biodiversity, and water resources, began last week at EB Artur Nunes Vidal in Fermentelos, and yesterday moved to the António Graça Basic School in Barrô, at the River Interpretation Centre.
Carried out since 2019 in the municipality's educational establishments and, since 2025, also at the River Interpretation Centre, this action has already reached over 3,800 students. The program integrates education for sustainability and science from the Municipality of Águeda.
Edson Santos, Vice-President of the Municipal Chamber of Águeda, highlighted that this is "one of the many environmental awareness and sustainability measures we implement," aligned with a broader strategy of river rehabilitation, natural resource protection, and the activity of the River Interpretation Centre.
The Vice-President argues that it is "fundamental to bring children closer to our rivers and make them aware of nature conservation," preparing them to "take an active role in their protection" by better understanding water resources and biodiversity.
The sessions include playful-pedagogical activities on efficient water use, native fish species, habitat restoration, invasive species, and river continuity. Students are also invited to reflect on their role in nature protection and the importance of adopting sustainable behaviors.
In the "My River" component, children interactively explore the biodiversity of the region's rivers and personalize an autochthonous fish for a virtual environment. Activities can take place at schools or at the River Interpretation Centre.
The initiative also integrates communication actions for the LIFE REVIVE project, focused on improving the ecological status of the Lima and Vouga river basins.
