The Mayor, Pedro Nascimento Cabral, highlighted housing as a key priority for the municipality, following the construction of 102 new homes under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). The proposed Municipal Budget for 2027 signals a significant boost to housing policy.
The largest portion of the investment, approximately 14.4 million euros, will fund new housing projects, creating 61 new units across four parishes: São Pedro (25 homes on Rua Bento José Morais and five on Rua das Cabaças) and Fajã de Cima (23 units on Rua Agostinho Cymbron and eight on Beco do Patrício).
Additionally, around 1.1 million euros will be invested in infrastructure for 21 plots designated for single-family homes in the parishes of Arrifes, Ginetes, Remédios, and Relva. This initiative will be guided by a new Plot Allocation Regulation.
The municipal budget also allocates approximately 500,000 euros for enhanced rental support programs for families facing financial difficulties, and 250,000 euros for the renovation and improvement of dilapidated housing.
The municipal housing strategy adopts an integrated approach, combining increased public supply, support for building private homes, rental assistance, and the refurbishment of existing properties. The City Council also approved an increase in the Municipal Property Tax (IMI) for vacant buildings.
The council also plans to foster cooperation with the Regional Government, housing cooperatives, social solidarity institutions, and private developers to increase the availability of affordable housing.
