The city of Horta, in Faial, hosted the 3rd General Assembly of the GENESIS project from October 6 to 8, 2026, focusing on Nature-based Solutions for water infrastructure.

Organized by the Horta Municipal Chamber, the meeting was attended by Elsa Cristina Ramalho and José Sampaio, representatives of LNEG (National Laboratory of Energy and Geology). The GENESIS project aims to enhance the climate resilience of critical water infrastructure through intelligent and innovative Nature-based Solutions (NbS).
The goal is to protect groundwater, optimize water use and reuse, and ensure more reliable water management, safeguarding socioeconomic activities and mitigating climate change impacts. The concept will be tested in 9 pilots across Macaronesia, including the Azores (Faial), Madeira, Cape Verde, and the Canary Islands.
LNEG is actively participating in Demonstrator #7, on Faial Island, which involves building a system to recover and store an aquifer using excess potable water. Over the three days, experiences, challenges, and project progress were shared.
Elsa Cristina Ramalho presented the state-of-the-art for Demonstrator #7 Faial, co-organized the technical visit, and participated in a workshop on "Water nature-based solutions for islands’ resilience", where she presented the "GENESIS Solution".
