Azorean pharmacist Tiago Costa has completed his doctorate with research focused on optimizing health information management and electronic system interoperability, a work that has already earned him an award and anticipates scientific publications.

Tiago Costa, a pharmacist specializing in Hospital Pharmacy, presented his Doctoral thesis in Economic and Business Sciences from the University of the Azores. The research, titled «Stakeholders’ perspectives as key drivers of health information management optimization: A system interoperability and data linkage approach», analyzed the perspectives of various stakeholders in the health sector in the Azores, including pharmacists, other health professionals, users, managers, and policymakers.
The study aimed to understand the motivations regarding the adoption and use of electronic systems for accessing health data. The research project secured 2nd place in the «PhD & Researchers» category at the Digital Health Summit 2025, organized by H-INNOVA – Health Innovation HUB. Three international scientific publications are also expected to arise from this work.
The completion of this doctorate highlights the importance of academic and scientific qualification for pharmacists, even outside the traditional university context, contributing to professional differentiation, knowledge production, and innovation in healthcare.
The Order of Pharmacists values the development of research pathways within a professional context and the link between pharmaceutical practice and academia, considering them fundamental for promoting knowledge sharing, continuous improvement of care, and professional development.
