The Angra do Heroísmo Municipal Council hosted, on October 14, at the Paços do Concelho, the presentation of Monte Brasil 2026 – 1st International Festival of Literature and History of Angra do Heroísmo. The event, which will take place between November 27 and December 6, counts on the Municipality as its main partner.
Promoted by the Associação Cultural Dois Caminhos, the festival will bring together writers, historians, researchers, artists, and cultural agents from different geographies. The program crosses literature, history, art, and knowledge, also valuing local authors and creators.
Under the theme «The Discovery of Identity», this first edition holds particular significance in a year marking the 50th anniversary of the Autonomy of the Azores and approaching the 600th anniversary of the archipelago's discovery. It constitutes an opportunity to reflect on Azorean and Atlantic identity, its history, and future challenges.
The program includes conferences, book presentations, exhibitions, author meetings, and initiatives aimed at the school community. Notably, a Book Fair focused on the infant-youth audience will be held during the Municipality's Christmas programming, encouraging contact with books and reading.
The project aims to consolidate Angra do Heroísmo as a space for creation, reflection, and cultural sharing, promoting continuous cultural dynamics throughout the year through meetings and residencies.
At the presentation, the Vice-President of the Municipal Council, Guido Teles, highlighted the city's connection to literature and culture, recalling names such as Álamo Oliveira and Emanuel Félix, and the impact of Vitorino Nemésio.
“"Angra do Heroísmo possesses a historical, cultural, and literary heritage that is important to preserve, value, and project into the future. Holding this festival is an opportunity to affirm that identity, promote encounters between different generations and geographies, and reinforce the projection of our city as a space of culture, knowledge, and creation."
Guido Teles emphasized the Municipality's commitment to the festival through financial and logistical support, and the importance of involving local cultural agents. "We want this festival to be a true collective project, valuing our cultural agents and creating new collaboration opportunities," he stated, praising the organization's openness.
