The distinction, referring to the 2026–2027 biennium, recognizes the continuous work developed by the municipality in promoting equality between women and men, citizenship, and non-discrimination, through cross-cutting intervention in various areas of municipal action.
This recognition values the strategy implemented by the Municipality of Sernancelhe, aligned with the National Strategy for Equality and Non-Discrimination (ENIND), which seeks to integrate the gender perspective into local public policies and promote a more inclusive, participatory, and diversity-respecting community.
The municipal strategy covers areas such as organization and management, human resources, planning, work-life balance, inclusive communication, and prevention of gender stereotypes. It also includes initiatives to counter social patterns that condition choices, encouraging men's participation in care areas and women's in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
The work developed is based on coordination with citizens and local structures, promoting institutional cooperation and awareness-raising. The Social Network, the Municipal Council of Education and Health, and business networks are examples of this collaborative approach.
“"This distinction recognizes the work developed in coordination with citizens and local forums, reinforcing the importance of community and institutional mobilization in promoting equality and preventing discrimination."
The municipal strategy also covers education, culture, youth, health, social action, sports, mobility, security, and urban planning, ensuring that the principles of equality and non-discrimination are present in daily decisions and policies.
The Municipality of Sernancelhe also integrates the Portuguese Network of Healthy Municipalities and is preparing to create the Municipal Youth Council, reinforcing its commitment to the well-being and development of younger generations.
The awarding of the "Viver em Igualdade" Prize thus constitutes a recognition of the path taken by the municipality and an incentive to continue public policies aimed at promoting rights, participation, and opportunities for all.
