The Murganheira Conference, in its eighth edition in Lamego, gathered experts to debate the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI), questioning if it can be humanist.

The Teatro Ribeiro Conceição in Lamego hosted the eighth edition of the Murganheira Conference, featuring speakers of great scientific renown and communication skills. The event focused on the theme "Can Artificial Intelligence (AI) be humanist?".
The main speaker, José Carlos Príncipe, a lecturer at the University of Florida, shared ideas with Manuel Sobrinho Simões (pathologist) and Júlio Machado Vaz (psychiatrist). The dialogue, moderated by Antena 1 journalists Miguel Soares and Tiago Alves, explored AI's transformative impact on the economy, job market, and social dynamics.
AI's technological revolution was presented as a double-edged sword, capable of driving unprecedented efficiency and democratizing knowledge, but also introducing ethical, labor, and security risks that demand urgent governance.
José Carlos Príncipe argued for the importance of AI in solving complex problems, comparing its understanding to that of physics. "For me, understanding AI is as important as understanding physics. It's another world," he explained.
The conference was organized by Caves da Murganheira, with the support of the Município de Lamego.
