The initiative, promoted by the European Commission, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable mobility and the creation of more accessible and inclusive communities. Throughout the week, various activities took place, including the offer of tickets to the Aristides de Sousa Mendes Museum, intergenerational bicycle rides, and the «Viver a Rua» (Living the Street) initiative.
For two days, the area surrounding the Peace Court was transformed into a space for coexistence, leisure, and participation, free from car traffic. The location hosted activities such as basketball hoops, a mini-football field, pedal-powered smoothies, a virtual bicycle experience on the «O Caminho da Esperança» Ecopista, bicycle races for children, and electric tricycle events for seniors, traditional games, and blood pressure screenings.
On Sunday, the space also hosted the Market of Used Products and Antiques, attracting many visitors who took advantage of the urban environment to socialize and enjoy the area.
A notable initiative was «Streets without Barriers», in collaboration with the Senior University of Carregal do Sal. Participants identified mobility obstacles in the town center, compiling a report that was delivered to the Municipal Mayor and the Executive on September 22. This act symbolized community participation in identifying problems and jointly seeking solutions.
Carregal do Sal's participation in this week aimed to lay the groundwork for a continuous policy of mobility and sustainability. The event involved the partnership of various entities, including the Association of Municipalities of Planalto Beirão, Caixa de Crédito Agrícola Mútuo, Rodrigues Pharmacy, GNR (National Republican Guard), Volunteer Firefighters of Carregal do Sal and Cabanas de Viriato, among other municipal institutions and services.
The organization expressed gratitude to all partners for their collaboration and commitment, and indicated an intention to continue this initiative in future editions, reinforcing the commitment to environmental sustainability, mobility, and the creation of a more inclusive territory for all generations.
